What type of reborn doll are you looking for? The possibilities are endless. With reborn dolls, you aren’t limited to choosing between a boy and girl. In addition to gender, many reborn dolls are designed to resemble ages, ethnicities and even individual babies.

You can even find reborn dolls with specific poses and facial expressions. Regardless of your preference, there’s probably a reborn doll out there with your name on it. You just need to take the initial step of starting your search.

Of course, you can always choose to build your own doll using one of the many kits available. Reborn doll kits typically consist of unpainted arms, legs and a head. Some of them contain a torso as well,  but other reborn doll kits do not. Reborn doll kits essentially provide a blank canvas for artists of all skill levels. Professional and amateur reborn doll artists alike use these kits to produce brilliantly detailed reborn dolls.

What Are Reborn Dolls?

If you’re new to the hobby, you might be wondering what reborn dolls are exactly. While they’ve been around for several decades — and they’ve even been featured in mainstream talk shows and news programs — many people are unfamiliar with reborn dolls.

Reborn dolls are lifelike dolls that have been meticulously designed with an emphasis on realism. Also known as “living dolls” and “newborn dolls,” they are designed to look like real, living babies. Reborn dolls, in fact, are often mistaken for real babies because of their uncanny resemblance.

Creating a reborn doll is a tedious and time-consuming process. Nonetheless, most artists will agree that it’s well worth it in the end. To design a reborn doll, artists will often use photographs of real babies. They’ll reference these photos to accurately recreate the desired features, resulting in an unparalleled level of realism.

Once complete, reborn dolls will closely resemble an actual living baby. There have been instances where people have called the police or fire department after seeing a baby locked inside a car. Once the authorities arrive on the scene to free the baby,  however, they find out that it’s only a reborn doll trapped in the car and not a real baby. This is why it’s a good idea to conceal or cover reborn dolls left inside a vehicle.

Purchasing a reborn doll for the first time can be a difficult and downright confusing process. To make things easier, here are a couple of things you should consider:

  • Gender: One of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make is whether you want a boy or girl reborn doll. You may not realize it, but the gender of your reborn is going to affect things like how you dress them and set up their nursery, so don’t make this decision lightly.
  • Eyes: You should consider the eyes when choosing a reborn doll. Some reborn dolls are designed with their eyes open, whereas others are designed with their eyes closed. Closed eyes create the impression of a sleeping baby, which some collectors prefer.
  • Facial Expression: You’ll want to take note of the facial expression when choosing a reborn doll. Expressions represent moods, with some reborn dolls laughing, crying or smiling.
  • Material: Reborn dolls are made out of a variety of materials, and it’s important to understand what these are before purchasing one. The body and limbs are generally either silicon, vinyl or a plastic blend, all of which offer some unique advantages and disadvantages.
  • Accessories: A lot of artists include some neat little accessories with their reborn dolls, such as pacifiers, blankets, clothes, birth certificates and certificates of authenticity (COA). Check to see what types of accessories a doll comes with before purchasing it.
  • Price: You can’t ignore the price when choosing a reborn doll. Reborn dolls almost always cost more than toy dolls, but some reborns are more expensive than others. On the low end, you can expect to pay less than $100. Other reborn dolls cost thousands of dollars.

Reborning a Doll: What Does It Involve?

The process of turning a toy doll — or a kit for that matter — into a reborn doll is known as “reborning.” As a newcomer to the hobby, you may assume that it involves nothing more than a few layers of paint. Painting is certainly a step, but reborning includes many other steps.

You might be surprised to learn that many artists spend over 40 hours to reborn a doll. They must remove the limbs from the toy doll, followed by stripping the factory paint. Artists can then begin painting the limbs.

Rather than using plain paint, most artists use a special type of heat-set paint. Some artists apply over two dozen layers of this heat-set paint. Each layer, of course, must be given enough time to dry in a heated environment. Applying multiple layers of high-quality, heat-set paint will result in a lifelike tone.

After applying multiple layers of paint, artists must then assemble the limbs.  Next comes blushing, hair rooting, adding weights, mottling and other steps. The bottom line is that reborning a doll is a lot of work. You can’t just toss a few layers of paint on a toy doll and expect it to look like a real baby. For a truly realistic appearance, you must perform a complete reborn process that includes all of the necessary steps.

When all of these features have been added and the paint is given ample time to dry, artists are left with a new reborn doll. Of course, this is just the basics of reborning. If you want to take a shot at making your own from scratch, check out our guide on how to reborn a doll. The process may seem overwhelming at first. As with most things in life, though, the more time and energy you invest into reborning, the better you’ll become at it.

Buy, Build From Scratch or Use a Kit

If you want to add a reborn doll to your family, you have one of three options: buy, build from scratch or use a kit. Buying a reborn doll is the easiest option. You can shop for these highly detailed and realistic dolls here on our website.

Building a reborn doll from scratch is the most difficult option. You’ll have to purchase all of the necessary supplies, including a toy doll, and then you’ll have to paint and customize it with features. But building a reborn doll from scratch is rewarding. More importantly, it allows you to choose all of your desired features.

Instead of attempting to create a reborn doll from the ground up, you can purchase a reborn doll kit that includes all of the head and limbs. These reborn doll kits are designed for artists of all skill levels. Using a reborn doll kit is easier than building a reborn doll from scratch, making them particularly popular among beginner and intermediate artists.

Now that you know the basics of reborn dolls, you can begin your search for the newest member of your family.
