Palestinian-American comic Marena Riyad started throwing comedy shows at her henna salon. Now she’s founded a festival.

What started as an occasional Saturday night of comedy in a tiny henna salon has become a multicultural, three-day, stand-up festival – with each day taking on a different geographical or cultural area from the Middle East to South Asia.

The Kufiya Comedy Festival will present local comics such as Sheridi Lester, who’s opened for Jeff Ross, as well as touring talent like Kiki Young, who founded Crazy Woke Asians. And the festival features more than just jokes. It’ll offer short films, food, live music, dance and a marketplace at the Urban Arts Center in Oak Cliff.

Marena Riyad is the festival’s founder. A Palestinian-American who wanted to be “a non-starving artist,” she opened a salon, the Haus of Henna, in Oak Lawn. But performing was her real drive; she’d started doing stand-up in 2018.

The family of Anthony Johnson, who died in Tarrant

The family of Anthony Johnson, who died in Tarrant County custody after jailers pepper sprayed him, is calling on the sheriff’s office to show them the video of what happened.

Johnson, 31, died after the altercation during a contraband check on April 21, according to the sheriff’s office. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet declared his cause of death.

Johnson’s mother and sisters spoke before the Tarrant County Commissioners Court at their meeting Tuesday, demanding more transparency in their loved one’s death and more oversight of the Tarrant County jail system.

More than 60 people have died in custody since 2017, according to state data.

“This has been festering in the county for years, and you’ve done nothing about it,” Johnson’s mother, Jacqualyne Johnson, said to commissioners.

The family, who calls Anthony “AJ”, told reporters they’ve struggled to get information about his death, which is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.

Allen has a gun violence problem — and it’s no

Allen has a gun violence problem — and it’s not just because of last year’s mass shooting.

A gunman armed with three assault weapons fatally shot eight victims at the Allen Premium Outlets mall almost exactly a year ago, before he was killed by a police officer. But even when those deaths are excluded, a KERA analysis found that 19 more people in Allen died from gun violence last year — more than double the gun-related deaths there in 2022.

And some Allen residents want to do something about it.

Life was almost back to normal at the mall on Sunday — one day before the anniversary of the mass shooting. It was packed. Music wafted through the open air mall’s speakers. The birds were chirping.

But just a few miles from the mall at Green Park, advocates for gun control mourned the lives lost when Mauricio Garcia, a gunman with Nazi tattoos, showed up on May 6, 2023, and shot and Kyu and Cindy Cho, their three-year-old son James Cho, 11-year-old Daniella and her eight-year-old sister Sofia Mendoza, Christian LaCour, Elio Cumana Rivas and Aishwarya Thatikonda.
