Why donate to BBCStreams.com?

Donating to BBCStreams.com will enable us to continue providing this service, which is funded completely by donations from our users.

Donations Update: (16th February 2011): BBCStreams.com is once again appealing for donations - we rely entirely on the generosity of our users, like yourself, to keep this service on-line. Thank you for your continued support.

Thank you very much for all of the support over the past two years - we have brought BBC Streams to 10,000s of people on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices for free. We intend to continue doing this not just on the iPhone and iOS, but also Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 and Palm (HP) WebOS devices. We are finally nearing completion of BBCStreams apps on all of these devices and are currently testing some of them - we know that our valued users like yourself have really been looking forward to our apps, especially on iPhone - equally we been really excited about releasing these excellent apps to everyone for free.

Most importantly we have also fixed all issues with streaming alongside the intermittent issues for international or overseas users - everything should now be running well.

Our release dates for all apps should be over the next few weeks with iOS / iPhone and Android apps coming first. We have been through a lot - we have been cheated by rogue iPhone app developers in the past, we have learnt many lessons, and experienced many issues with streaming quality early last year but now we are finally here - we can finally bring you the service we always wanted to, on every device, and not just with all BBC radio stations but with any radio station you like - completely free and without advertising.

The new application will:

  • Be called ‘Streams App’
  • Be supported on all iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 and Palm (HP) WebOS devices
  • Play all BBC radio stations (including regional stations) where ever you are in the world
  • Play other independent UK radio stations, worldwide
  • Eliminate the need for inputting stream URLs and provide an application which will allow the streaming of all BBC Radio stations, anywhere you are in the world, on iPhone and iPod Touch
  • The iPhone application will be FREE and will carry NO ADVERTISEMENTS.
  • Anybody who donates to our site, or who has donated in the past will be mentioned in the credits of the application if they would like, with a link to their company or web address if they would like this (please e-mail us after you donate).

We have put over £1500 of our own funds in to this project and there are four of us involved - once again, we intend to allow people not just to listen to BBC Radio but any radio station they wish - national and international. All applications will be completely free to use and advertisement free - as well as being beautifully designed and very functional.

Launching and hosting these applications is going to be very expensive, we've already had to upgrade our web hosting (server) to deal with the influx of users to the site which we know this will create, as well as paying for the development of all the apps and a new website. This is a very exciting project bringing free radio (including BBC Radio) to international and national users on every platform. It already costs over £120 per month to run the site, and we expect these costs alone to increase exponentially over the next few weeks, added to these costs are those of dealing with 1000s of support e-mails on a regular basis. On top of these costs are the large sums of money required for the building, testing and maintenance of iPhone/mobile applications.

We are committed to providing all apps completely free - although we cant do it without your help - the help of our supportive, generous and loyal users. We need to raise around £1000 to complete testing immediately, launch all these apps in the next few weeks and keep the site on line and up to speed during the launch. We are also in need of money to keep BBCStreams.com on line in it’s current state, and to keep catering for the 1000s of people who use the site daily.

We did ask for donations around two years ago, and we received a number of small donations which greatly helped in keeping the site up and running. We also started development of the iPhone app back then - but underestimated the complexities involved. Late last year, we finally took on two application developers and this week we can announce that development of applications has been well on its way and that we are nearing completion. The one thing stopping us releasing all of the applications right now is money - and we are determined not to charge for this app or put advertising within it despite being advised by many to the contrary.

You are one of a small portion of our users who took the time to sign up to our newsletter - if a good number of those who read this email donate between £10 and £20 to this cause, or for that matter any amount at all - we will be well on the way to achieving our target and bringing you the best free radio application ever, and most importantly unlimited free access to all national, regional and international BBC Radio stations whilst you are on the move, whatever kind of mobile device you have and whatever software it runs - iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone or Palm WebOS.

I really hope that you can donate - and if you have any questions, words of support or any other queries about the project then please do get in touch.

Remember you can follow @BBCStreams on twitter or keep checking back at BBCStreams.com for the latest developments over the coming weeks. I will also e-mail you once more in about 1 week time to let you know how much we have raised and to keep you informed about development and release of the iPhone (and other mobile platform) applications.

Without the continued support of our users, we are likely to have to close BBCStreams.com - and it’s also likely that much of the work on iPhone apps and mobile apps we have done to date will go to waste.

So once again, If you enjoy the use of BBCStreams.com, or are anticipating our mobile applications, I would like to give you the opportunity to donate as little or as much money as you wish to ourselves, so that we can continue to provide this service entirely for free, and continue improving it. We rely entirely on the generosity of our users, like yourself, to keep this service on-line.
